The favorite things I did on Friday.

18 May

I didn’t post any favorites yesterday.  I didn’t even open my computer because I was busy doing some of my favorite things.  Favorite things like what?, asks the chorus.  Favorite things like this:

I slept in until 10.  TEN.  After a couple weeks of roofers waking me up by 7, it was needed.  And you have to love a dog that not only lets you sleep until ten but actually keeps sleeping longer.  Mabel is a sleeping rock star.

I ate breakfast and watched the SERIES finale of The Office.  The Office has been a part of my life for the last nine years.  It’s sad to see it end but it was good.  It was good.

I cleaned.  It’s been a long while since I’ve had a Friday morning/afternoon to be at home and tidy up.  Quite honestly, a Friday at home to clean is one of my favorite things.  I put away the boxes that came back with me from Geep’s and washed my sheets; unloaded the dishwasher and washed dishes.  It was productive.  And awesome.

Mabel and I went for a walk and then it was off to the cities for me.  A bit over a month ago, I got together with three college friends for a game night.  We scheduled a second one for last night and there is now a third on the calendar for June which will take place here in Austin.  I like what we have going on.  Last night we played Settlers: Cities and Knights.  it was at least a three hour game and lots of fun for a Friday night.

Friday Favorites – a day early.

9 May

If you’re in the same boat as I, you need a little lift this Thursday.  It’s cold and rainy in Austin today.  The sun is hiding.  Then there is the perpetual busy, and glorious plans for an uninterrupted weekend, well, interrupted.  So, of course, instead of doing work, I’m taking this ten minute break to show you what cheered me up.

This.  This is all you need.

If you’re not smiling and laughing, I think you might be a lost cause for happiness.  It makes me so happy.  It also gives me a newfound respect and admiration of John Krasinski.  Him and his beautiful beard.

Favorite/current netflix obsession: Classic episodes of The Office.  Lately, all my current shows on Hulu + are in reruns and not new; hence returning to the old classic.  [“You can’t fire me.  I don’t work in this van.”]

Favorite confirmation moment: We were talking about birthdays and one young lady said that for her birthday, they always eat a trifle … which automatically transports me to the thanksgiving episode of Friends when Rachel makes [and screws up] a trifle … and so I said, “You guys are too young for Friends, right?” … to which they all looked at me like I was off my rocker.  “We have friends …”

Favorite upcoming weekend activity: Sewing & wine sleepover at Sara’s!  Mabel and I are hitting the road this afternoon to stay at Sara’s in the cities.  I’m taking my sewing machine and binding quilts is the name of the game.  Along with drinking wine.  And probably watching Pride and Prejudice.  Speaking of which –

Favorite Pride and Prejudice line of the week: As I reread a chapter or two each night before bed, I was delighted to read this gem again.  Mr. Collins to Lizzy – And now nothing remains for me but to assure you in the most animated language of the violence of my affection.  Violence of affection. Oh, awkward Mr. Collins.

Favorite sign of spring:  The snow.  Definitely the snow.  [That be sarcasm, dudes.  And I can’t complain.  Southeast MN has had it the easiest of all the MN quadrants.]

May the snow melt quickly.  Happy Friday.

Friday favorites?

12 Apr

Not in the traditional sense this week.  My Friday  was spent in two of my favorite places, neither being this computer compiling links and lists of favorite things.  Two places –

1. My sewing room.  Suddenly, in the last week, there has been a project on the design wall that grew and grew and I couldn’t stop working on it.  The quilt is now on my dining room table, ready to be sandwiched with batting by millions of safety pins.  It was going to be a quilt I give away but that jury is out; I’m kinda in love with it.  Especially the back.  [Not shown.  Cliffhanger!]

2.  The elementary school.  You know last week when I complained about not being a needed volunteer in first grade anymore?  About an hour after I published that post, I received a phone call.  Could I please come in?  There was a big project and they needed my help.  Of course!  I went to the elementary school and traced about twenty first graders on a very large roll of paper.  I traced and then they cut themselves out.  [It takes longer than you think to trace a kid or twenty!]  Today I had to go back to finish up the last fifteen kids or so.

That was my Friday, about to be rounded out by old episodes of The Office, red wine, and a skype date with some of my favorite people who live in Montana.  How was your Friday?

How is it Friday already?

Fridays became sad today.  I received an email from one of the first grade teachers whose class I volunteer with on Friday afternoons.  For the rest of the year, their Friday afternoons will look different with some new rotational lessons between the classes.  Therefore, Lindsay is no longer needed.  I actually teared up a bit when I read it [proof I’m hanging by a string here, people].  I looked forward to that hour and a half each week.  I’m bummed.  I have my sub license in so subbing on Fridays is a possibility too … but no calls for that yet.

In an attempt to be more uplifting –

Here.**

And here.***

* Are you an introvert who sometimes dreads dinner parties?  *raises hand*

** I made this for dinner on Tuesday night and it was delicious.  It will be a standard in my kitchen.

*** Sewing, meet golf.

That’s all.  I’m not very exciting today.  Maybe next week!

Friday Favorites: Yellow

29 Mar

I sit here, drinking my coffee.  Not yet showered or ready for the noon Good Friday service of which I am a part.  I sit here, envious of my sister and cousins and aunt and uncle who are in Chicago for the day.  I wish I was there with them.  I sit here, ready for an empty tomb.  I’ll be heading home to WI after our two Easter services for the briefest of brief visits.  Sometimes being a grown-up isn’t that much fun at all.

I sit here, preparing myself to share with you the most favorite things I’ve come across this week.  With the full moon that popped in the night sky and the sun that has begun to shine once again, you’ll sense a theme.  Yellow, yellow, yellow.

Classic lemon tart.  This sounds beyond delicious and quite simple, actually.

Cap’n Crunch is yellow.  Ever thought about coating French toast with it?  Crunchy French toast with Cap’n Crunch coating.  I’m so serious.  Will someone please come sleepover at my house so we can try it?  Pleeease?  [I’m a closet Cap’n Crunch lover.  Growing up we had two kinds of cereal in our house: rice crispies and corn flakes.  But if I ever was over at someone’s house with Cap’n Crunch, oh boy.]

Maybe yellow will be the color of my kayak.  My friend, Sara, and I are officially registered for an overnight kayak trip in the Apostle Islands this summer.  We are so super excited!  Now I need to buy a sleeping bag … and rain gear … maybe a tent …

How cute is the DIY dog bed?  It would need to be a pretty large one for Mabel, the giant yellow lab, but it’s still a super cute idea.

Last but not least – it’s not overly yellow but it goes with the weekend.  Happy Easter, friends.

Hey. It’s the favorites of Friday.

22 Mar

[Hey.  It’s the favorites of Friday.]

Favorite tea: Apple cinnamon.   It’s now part of my bedtime routine.  Tea + a chapter of Pride and Prejudice.

Favorite blog post: This post is by the former pastor at my home congregation.  It resonated with me and where I’m at currently.   Worship is a contact sport.  I probably wouldn’t be a pastor if Pastor Clint hadn’t nominated me for a scholarship at seminary … before I ever said I would even go to seminary.  Funny how that worked.

Favorite craft: It’s quite nearly Easter.  I love Easter.  Loved it since I was a child.  [Fun Lindsay fact #396: I used to host “Easter parties” at the farm for my friends.  I would plan elaborate Easter games and my brothers & cousins would hide Easter eggs for us to find, usually under dead birds or with the candy switched mysteriously for dog poop.]  Sadly, I have little energy or people with whom to have Easter parties these days … but if I did, we might dye eggs in these trendy ways.

Favorite story: I visited a gentleman at the care center.  I was getting ready to leave, shook his hand, and told him I should be on my way.  Good, he said.  I was going to ask you to leave because I have to pee.  Perfect timing.

Favorite pin: A quote from Lemony Snicket.

Favorite videos: This Sunday is Palm Sunday.  Prepare yourself for Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem with these two videos.  Please.  They’re awesome.

This video was made in part by the talents [both media and harlem shaking as Jesus] by Kevin, the brother to my bestie, Sara, and a former coworker of mine from Stillwater.  We shared a basement office with no windows together.

Nothing like a little liturgical dance by Stephen Colbert.

[Friday Favorites.]

I’m into reading about food lately.  Books by chefs and cool people like that.  Current reads: The Sweet Life in Paris by my favorite Parisan food blogger and An Everlasting Meal by Tamar Adler.

Travel Cat on Jaunted.com travel site.  Apparently people submit photos of cats while traveling.  This particular one is by @theangryskittle, aka my older brother.

Oh, no, you didn’t.  I’m drooling at the computer.  [almond-thumbprint-cookies-with-dark-chocolate-and-sea-salt.]  These should be on my weekend to-do list.  If I had people to share it with, I would be making this for Sunday – Magic Munch for St.Patty’s.  Since we’re talking about food [always], I’ve made this recipe for sweet potato fries with avocado twice in the last week.  It’s the paprika.

If my hair is losing its curl, what does this then mean?

[Friday Favorites.]  I don’t have much for favorites this week.  Instead of being online or finding cools things on pinterest, I’ve been writing sermons and preparing for funerals.  Hopefully, I’ll be back in full force next Friday.  For now, just two things –

First, I went on a search for instrumental music to use during our Wednesday night Lenten service.  Just by happy happenstance, I clicked on this album because of it’s beautiful cover.  In a Time Lapse.  I’m in love.  I ended up buying the whole album and have listened to it a lot in the last couple days.  It’s great for writing sermons.

Second, I just caught up on Jon Stewart during my breakfast this morning.  This segment on maple syrup in Canada struck me as one of the most funny things I’ve seen in a long time.  It’s great.

Okay.  Just kidding.  One more thing – in my sorrow and self-pity and sleepiness after such a crazy week – I bought this.  I just love colorful things in my kitchen and I think it will come in handy.  I’m already anticipating its glorious arrival early next week.

Gosh, guys.  I know I said last week was crazy no-good.  This week wasn’t much less crazy.  But probably a little good-er.  Yet, still, I’ve been a horrible blogging friend.  Should I make another promise to do better next week?  I’ll probably fail.  Please forgive me in advance for both an empty promise and failing to live up to it.

It is Lent, after all.  Cut this pastor a break.

Right.  Friday favorites.  I didn’t have a whole lot of time to search for awesomeness this week but some of this just fell into my lap.  Welcome to my favorites of the week.   Today they’re short and sweet.

I do love sewing paper.

Oh Happy Day writes of a spoon cookie cutter.  Can you imagine eating ice cream with a cookie spoon?!  Mind blown, right?

I have very little idea of how a chocolate pear custard tart with almond shortbread crust would taste but I can only imagine it would start with a g, end with a d, and have oo in the middle.

My favorite moment from the week?  When little precious three year old L. greets me.  She always has the most innocent, “Hey Pastor Lindsay” for me.  It’s pretty darn darling.

Do you love a good grammar/punctuation laugh like I do?  Look no further than these new punctuation marks!

And last but not least —
